MODAL AUXILIARY

            Modal Auxiliary verb adalah kata yang ditempatkan sebelum main verb (kata kerja utama) untuk memodifikasi makna dari kata kerja utama tersebut. Fungsinya untuk mengekspresikan willingness (kemauan) atau ability (kemampuan),necessity (kebutuhan), dan possibility (kemungkinan).

            Simple Modal

                        Simple Modal (kata modal Sederhana) Jenis modal terdiri dari sembilan kata modal umum  (Biber, Conrad dan Leech, 2002: 174): can, could, may, might, must, should, will, would, and shall.

Contoh kalimat :

Ø  It can rain everyday during the rainy season

Ø  I couldn’t speak bahasa a year ago

Ø  She can really play

           

            Periphrastic modal

                        Periphrastic modal juga disebut 'semi-kata modal' atau kata modal 'quasi-kata modal' didefinisikan oleh Leech et.al. (2002: 174) sebagai "konstruksi multi-kata yang berfungsi seperti verba modal". Beberapa semi-kata modal bisa ditandai untuk momen  yang sedang berlangsung dan ditandai dengan terdapat subject (orangnya).

Contoh Kalimat :

Ø  When I was young, I used to play tennis very often

Ø  Milk is supposed to be good for our health.

Ø  They are allowed to have a break after lunch.

            Ephistemic Modal

                        modalitas epistemik, berkaitan dengan kemungkinan teoritis proposisi yang benar atau tidak benar (termasuk kemungkinan dan kepastian).

Contoh            :

Ø  That can indeed help.

Ø  That could happen soon.

Ø  She will try to lie

RELATIVE CLAUSES

            Pengertian relative clauses relative clause” adalah anak kalimat yang memodifikasi noun (kata benda) atau noun phrase.

            Fungsi relative clauses memberikan informasi penting untuk menjelaskan atau mengidentifikasi orang – orang atau benda yang sedang kita bicarakan.

            Contoh

Ø  The boy who is talking there is a candidate of the winner in this competition.

Ø  Adam Johnson, who was a famous actor, died of an accident.

Ø  “The girl who is standing there is my sister.”
